James Bakker

Biographical Info James Bakker is a Senior Associate at Lee & Associates Charleston and specializes in retail and multi-family brokerage. He brings to the firm over a decade of experience in retail, multifamily and mixed-use development, project management, and historic adaptive re-use development utilizing Federal Historic Tax Credits, South Carolina Historic Tax Credits, South Carolina Abandoned Buildings Revitalization Act Tax Credits and South Carolina Textiles Communities Revitalization Tax Credits. He has purchased and redeveloped several properties, including Star Mill and the Montgomery Building in Spartanburg, South Carolina. He has earned numerous awards for his work on the Montgomery Building, including the 2021 AIA SC Honor Award in Adaptive Reuse and Historic Preservation and the 2021 South Carolina Historic Preservation award. James earned a Master of Real Estate Development degree from Clemson University. Prior to that, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a minor in Finance from Auburn University. He worked for a number of organizations after college but most recently, he was a Principal at BF Holdings, LLC in Charleston and prior to that, Vice President of Commercial Development at Cothran Properties in Greenville, SC. James is a proud member of the South Carolina Army National Guard where he serves as an Engineer Officer. In 2021, he was awarded the Steel de Fleury Medal for Selfless Service to the US Army Engineer Regiment from the US Army Engineer Association. He also maintains memberships in the Urban Land Institute, the Society of Military Engineers, and the International Council of Shopping Centers. He is actively involved in the Bakker Family Fund through the Coastal Community Foundation. In his free time, James enjoys hunting, fishing, reading, and spending time with his wife and daughter.
